Police News: White powder in mail evacuates Fleetwood Community Center

Suspicious Letter: An employee of the Public School Employees Retirement System was opening mail on June 24 at 2:35 p.m. in her Region 3 Fleetwood office when she became alarmed as a white powder fell from the envelope. The office area was secured and a portion of the Community Center was evacuated and secured. The people in the office were evacuated by Fleetwood Ambulance personnel and released. The Berks County Department of Emergency Services responded and were assisted by Fleetwood Fire Company. Field testing of the white powder failed to identify the powder as a hazardous substance. The area was decontaminated.

Further investigation determined the substance was derived from a large amount of white out that had been used in the correspondence and had dried out. The handling of the matter was coordinated with the U.S. Postal Inspection Service and the Pennsylvania Department of Homeland Security.

From June 10 to June 23, Fleetwood Police responded to 105 total incidents.

May 26: Police investigated the report of Theft from Vehicle after items were reported missing from an unlocked vehicle while it was parked at a residence in the 200 block of E. Main St.

May 27: Police investigated the report of Attempted Theft from Vehicle after it was reported that an unlocked vehicle was gone through while it was parked at a residence in the 00 block of S. Baldy St.

Police investigated the report of Theft after an item was reported missing from the Dollar Tree Store, 45 S. Constitution Blvd.

May 28: Police are investigating the report of Graffiti Vandalism to a wall of a building at DeTurk Hardware, 326 W. Main St. and a stop sign located at the intersection of Sander Alley and Foundry Alley.

May 29: Police are investigating the report of Graffiti Vandalism to steps of a building at Bentley Holding Group, LP, 334 W. Main St.

Police arrested Donald Kruise, 28 of Bensalem, for Public Drunkenness following an incident that occurred in the 100 block of Railroad St.

May 30: Police are investigating the report of Graffiti Vandalism to the wall of a building at the Kutztown Borough Train Station, 110 Railroad St.

May 31: Police arrested Jon Singer, 22 of Alburtis, for Public Drunkenness following an incident that occurred at Turkey Hill Minit Market, 50 W. Main St.

June 4: Police arrested Dennis Salazar, 25 of North Bergen, N.J., for Possession of a Small Amount of Marijuana, Disorderly Conduct and Public Drunkenness following an incident that occurred at Carl R. Bieber Tourways, Inc., 320 Fair St.

June 5: Police investigated the report of Theft of a Vehicle after a dirt bike was reported missing from Mission Screen Printing, 236 W. Walnut St.

June 6: After completing their investigation, police arrested Glendly Sergeant, 20 of Kutztown; Christopher Harmony, 40 of Mertztown, and Megan Strain, 18 of Topton, for Robbery, Simple Assault and other related offenses following an incident that occurred in the 300 block of W. Main St.

June 7: Police are investigating the report of Graffiti Vandalism to trailers that were parked on a parking lot at East Penn Manufacturing Company, 191 Willow St.

Police are investigating the report of Fraud following an incident that occurred at J A Meyer Jewelry, 156 W. Main St.

June 8: Police arrested Adam Grasso, 21 of Kutztown, for Violation of the Borough Noise Ordinance following an incident that occurred at 335 W. Main St. A Disruptive Conduct Report was also issued.

June 11: After completing their investigation, police arrested a Juvenile for Simple Assault and Harassment/Physical Contact following an incident that occurred in the Borough of Kutztown.

After completing their investigation, police arrested Nathaniel Gross, 22 of Lehighton, for Driving Under the Influence of Alcohol or a Controlled Substance following an incident that occurred in the 300 block of Fairview Drive.
