Families and musicians Band Together To Fight Breast Cancer in Fleetwood this past weekend.

Stacey Putt, event chairperson, started the fundraising event with her husband, Steve, three years ago. At that time, the event was in honor of Steve’s mother Dorothy, who was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2010. Now Band Together is held in her memory. Dorothy lost her battle to cancer Aug. 18, 2011.

“She is the inspiration behind the event,” said the couple in a Facebook posting to The Patriot.

They explained that the event was started because Stacey and Steve were unable to dedicate as much time as they could with her care. Steve’s father Jim along with his two sisters Leigh and Michelle were Dorothy’s daily caregivers during her battle.

“So in 2010 Band Together was born,” they wrote. “This is our third year for the event and continues to grow every year.”

Held at Fleetwood Park on June 29 from noon to 8 p.m., the event included bands, food, vendors selling their goods, kids games, moonbounce, barrel train rides, facepainting, Chinese auction items, 50/50 raffles and so much more.

All proceeds from the past three events have been given to Breast Cancer Support Services Of Berks County in West Reading.

“This was the organization Dorothy requested to have the money donated to. BCSS gave her a care bag of many resourceful things to help her feel loved and cared for during her struggle,” Stacey and Steve Putt wrote.

“So we fulfilled her wishes on where to go with the monetary donations from the event.”

The first year they gave a check to BCSS for $3,000. Last year they gave BCSS a check for $4,500. From this year’s event they gave BCSS a check for $8,500.

“We continue to get donations for this event from many local businesses and great friends and families,” they said. “This became a healing avenue for our family and we want to continue to help women in our community to get the help and care they need from such a great non-profit organization like ours in BCSS of Berks County.”

“Thank you all for the continuing support we get from everyone involved with our non-profit organiziation. Hope too see everyone at the 4th annual Band Together To Fight Breast Cancer 2014 event in the Fleetwood Park next year!” wrote Stacey and Steve Putt.
