The success of local comedian Howard Algeo has recently been acknowledged and rewarded.
Algeo was recently awarded the 2013-14 W.C. Fields Society’s Horizon Award. The Philadelphia-based organization dedicates itself to honoring new and rising stars, namely in the comedic field. Algeo stands as the oldest recipient to attain the prestigious award, and when asked about his rising success, Algeo replied, “It’s been awesome. Everybody just has been so supportive. It’s been really gratifying.” Harold Burnett, the president of the Society, compared Algeo with well-known stars such as Grammy Award winner George Carlin while describing Howard’s work as “refreshingly sincere and unpretentious.”
Algeo began his career nearly ten years ago by first taking an interest in theatre. He has since attended the Philadelphia Comedy Academy earlier this year and has busied himself by performing at a wide range of Philadelphia comedy venues. His acting has continued to increase, and he recently completed the DCP Theatre production of Cyrano de Bergerac. Algeo also exemplifies a talent in writing and remains a widely published poet.
“To me it’s sort of self-contained,” Algeo says. He dedicates himself to a particular process of first writing, then work-shopping, re-writing, getting a reaction, and finally, improving. “That creative process is what appeals to me,” he explains. His success continues to unfold as he plans out the next stage of his career.
Algeo recently acquired a monthly gig in the Philadelphia region. He plans on not only pursuing this venue but also hopes to perform at fundraisers. “I’m gonna keep at it,” he says.
He plans on returning to the Philadelphia Comedy Academy to further develop his comedic skills while also pursuing more auditions in the surrounding region. He encourages anyone interested in following his career to locate him on Facebook. Here, he connects with his supporters and relays information regarding upcoming venues. Local residents can also find videos of his recent performances by searching on local media venues such as YouTube.
Algeo and his family welcome anyone interested to come join him as he continues his venture into the world of comedy.
