Rita's Italian Ice, Boyertown, hosts head-shaving; raises $23,622 for Alex's Lemonade

Rita’s Italian Ice, Boyertown, held their 8th Annual Head Shaving Event on Sunday, June 30. A percentage of proceeds benefiting Alex’s Lemonade Stand Foundation, a nonprofit dedicated to finding cures for all kids with cancer.

This year’s grand total for Alex’s Lemonade Stand is $23,622. This amount brings Rita’s eight year total to $95,017.

More than 20 volunteers signed up to shave their heads in honor of children undergoing cancer treatment who experience hair loss and raise funds for the fight against childhood cancer. Jill Scott, mother of Alex and Co-Executive Director of the Alex’s Lemonade, was in attendence.

“We’re really making a difference.” said Scott. “Clinical trials are happening all around the country.” She continued to share stories regarding the impact that the campaign has had.

This year marks Rita’s 8th Annual Paper Lemon Fundraising Campaign and partnership with Alex’s Lemonade Stand Foundation (ALSF), which began June 5 and continued through June 18. All Rita’s Ice outlets encouraged Guests to donate $1 for a paper lemon to raise money for the charity. The lemons were used to build a “Wall of Hope,” a visual tribute to the community’s participation, at each Rita’s Ice location. This year Rita’s also established “Rita’s Fund of Hope”, which will ensure that the travel needs of families whose children are battling cancer are met.

Since 2006, Rita’s has been a corporate partner of ALSF and implemented the paper lemon campaign to help raise funds for pediatric cancer research, one Lemon Ice at a time. In honor of the Foundation’s namesake, the late Alexandra ‘Alex’ Scott, Rita’s renamed its Lemon Ice flavor—’Alex’s Lemonade.’

Lemon, one of Rita’s original flavor offerings when the company was established in 1984, is still one of the company’s most popular flavors.

Last year’s Head Shaving event in Boyertown generated more than $2,400 dollars in donations. Over the past seven years, Rita’s has collectively raised more than $3.5 million for pediatric cancer research, becoming one of the leading corporate fundraising partners for Alex’s Lemonade Stand Foundation.
