Silver Maple Veterinary Clinic celebrated their 25th anniversary June 24 to 29 offering a behind the scenes look of their veterinary hospital and informative discussions from local experts. The clinic hosted open forums on behavior training, pet cancer prevention, careers in veterinary medicine, and invited the public to meet a nationally competing dog sled team.
Celebrations concluded on June 29 with face painting, balloon animals, music, food, working dog demonstrations, pet therapy and canine good citizen discussions, local vendors and more.
In 1988, Dr. Samuel Yoder, a Kutztown native, returned to his family farm to practice veterinary medicine with his new wife, Dr. Annemarie Yoder. Having met at Cornell University, they were both fresh out of veterinary college and were eager to provide advanced, affordable veterinary care for the community, according to a release.
Their clinic provides rabies clinics, low cost spay/neuter programs, and have created a benefit fund to help those in need. They also offer the following services, advanced ultrasound, surgeries, and innovative nutritional counseling as well as preventive care and ancient acupuncture and Chinese herbs.
The couple started their practice in a carriage house in Kutztown and gradually expanded to their present day 5,000 square foot facility on Kutztown Road. During those initial 20 years, SMVC serviced every type of animal: dogs, cats, sheep, goats, pigs, cattle and horses. In 2008, they decided to concentrate in small animals and their growing family. SMVC presently employs more than 20 employees.
