Are you a fan of high adrenaline sports action?
The Pottstown Roller Derby Rockstars would like to welcome their fans to come join them as they compete in a knock-out, knock-down skater’s competition.
Set for July 13 at the 422 Sports Complex, the hometown Pottstown Roller Derby Blockstars will take on the Brandywine Brawlers. Fans can expect a tough bout as both teams will be utilizing some of their top league players. Originally started in September of 2010, Pottstown now hosts three teams within their own league including Damage Incorporated, Fabulous Disaster and The Flogging Mollies. These teams face off on a regular basis before establishing their Allstars and Blockstars teams. The two lineups then battle it out against outside leagues. This weekend will prove to be no different as two leagues face off on Pottstown’s own home turf.
Nathan Gauger, a head referee for the roller derby teams, prepares himself for the bash. “I travel all over the place. For me, I love to ref. I love helping out on that end.” Nate or Dirk-jammer as he’s known in the roller derby circles, has worked alongside the league since its infancy. He runs the local Bentley’s Skate Shop and has assisted with the growth of local roller derby teams. He recalls the initial meeting in 2010 when he was first visited by a local skater looking for some equipment. Rather than order via catalogues, his skating business has provided a sufficient means for required apparatus and has initiated a new standard for his business. He estimates that nearly 85 percent of his supplies are now connected in some way to roller derby and to skater-related needs. The initial meeting also sparked an interest and opportunity to take part in local competitions, and Nate has since committed himself to setting game standards through his efforts as head referee.
Fans are welcome to come and take part in the action this weekend as Nate and the teams will be doing their best to offer an exciting and engaging competition. Tickets can be found for $10 online or $15 at the door. Children ages 6-10 are $5 and will be discounted at the door. Children 5 and under are free. As is customary for the PRDR, a portion of the proceeds will be donated to a good cause. Additional information can be found online at pottstownrollerderbyrockstars.com or fans can follow them on Facebook at Pottstown Roller Derby. Doors open Saturday at 6 p.m. The team hopes to meet all their local fans and supporters as they do their best to win in this epic bout.
