BCTC students bring home 4 silver, 1 bronze

Fleetwood junior Jenna Roberts won silver Wellness & Nutrition at a national competition recently.

The Berks Career and Technology Center West student is studying Occupational Child Development.

After first qualifying at the state level skill and leadership competition, BCTC students earned the opportunity to compete at the Family, Career, & Community Leaders of America National Leadership and Skills Conference held in Nashville, Tenn. from July 6 to 11.

More than 3,600 students competed in STAR Events (Students Taking Action with Recognition) which are competitive events that build proficiency and achievement in leadership and job-related skills.

The Occupational Child Development students earned 4 Silver Medals and 1 Bronze Medal.

Other BCTC FCCLA Medalists included Exeter junior Taylor Hartline winning silver in National Programs in Action, Daniel Boone senior Chelsea Saylor winning silver in Early Childhood,Oley Valley senior Abi Shuman winning silver in National Programs inAction, and Home Schooled senior Emily Williams winning bronze in the Job Interview.

Family, Career and Community Leaders of America is a national student organization that helps young men and women become leaders and address important personal, family, work, and societal issues through Family and Consumer Sciences education. FCCLA has more than 190,000 members and more than 6,500 chapters from 50 state associations, Puerto Rico, and the Virgin Islands. The organization has involved more than 10 million youth since its founding in 1945.

BCTC students have the opportunity to participate in Career & Technical Student Organizations such as FCCLA. Participation in these organizations fosters leadership, community service, and cooperative interaction among students and faculty. Students enjoy an array of activities, including; career and technology fairs, field trips, service projects, special events and skill competitions.
