A woman in her 70s was taken to Reading Hospital Thursday after falling unconscious on a trail in the Monocacy Hill Recreation Area after she was stung by either bees or wasps.

Around 11 a.m., the woman was walking along the trails and trimming trees with a group of people when she was stung by several insects, possibly bees or wasps, police said. People around her at the time said that she felt fine at first, but soon felt dizzy and eventually fell to the ground, unconscious, police said

Her husband was present and said that she had no known allergies before the incident, according to police.

An all-terrain vehicle operated was used to extricate her from the trail, where Southern Berks EMS assisted her. Amity Fire Company was also on the scene, police said.

Amity Police Chief Kent Shuebrook said that no CPR was administered, and the woman continued breathing throughout the entire process. Shuebrook also said that other officers present said that the woman showed clear signs of anaphylactic shock.
