Bicyclist Michael Steffey died this morning after being struck by a car in Richmond Township.

Fleetwood Police Chief Steve Stinsky said Steffey, 56, Fleetwood, was traveling eastbound at 6:12 a.m. on Fleetwood-Lyons Road along the shoulder when he was struck from behind by a Honda Accord. Upon impact, the cyclist was ejected into a nearby lawn.

Witnesses reported to police that the vehicle was observed gradually veering toward the shoulder before the accident that occurred a few hundred feet east of School Road. Stinsky said the driver, Keith Harting, 50, Wolmesdorf, continued traveling east for 2/10 of a mile and then stopped after being flagged down by another motorist.

Fleetwood Ambulance transported Steffey to Reading Hospital where he was pronounced deceased. His next of kin was notified by the Berks County Coroner’s Office.

Stinsky said the bicyclist was wearing a helmet and fluorescent clothing.

Harting was wearing a seatbelt and was not injured.

Members of the Berks County Forensic Service Unit and Crash Reconstruction Team assisted with the processing of the crash scene.

The investigation continues. Walnuttown Fire Company also assisted at the scene.
