A bicyclist died this morning after being struck by a vehicle in the Fleetwood area.

Fleetwood Police Chief Steve Stinsky could not immediately release the name of the cyclist, the next of kin is being notified.

Stinsky said the bicyclist was traveling eastbound on Fleetwood-Lyons Road when a vehicle, also traveling east, struck the bike from behind at 6:12 a.m. Upon impact the cyclist was ejected into a nearby lawn.

Witnesses reported to police that the vehicle was observed gradually swerving toward the shoulder before the accident that occurred a few hundred feet east of School Road. Stinsky said the driver continued traveling east for 2/10 of a mile and then stopped after being flagged down by another motorist.

Fleetwood Ambulance transported the bicyclist to Reading Hospital where the cyclist was pronounced deceased.

Stinsky said the bicyclist was wearing a helmet and fluorescent clothing.

Berks County Forensics’ Crash Reconstruction Unit assisted with the investigation.

The investigation continues.
