EXETER – An 18-month-old girl who was struck by a car Sunday night died from the injuries she sustained, police said.

Evelyn Steinruck, of Parker Ford, ran from inside the Exeter Friends Meeting House in the 100 block of Meeting House Road around 7:20 p.m. toward the parking lot, police said.

‘Some children had been playing outside, and an 18-month-old child had run out behind a car as it was backing up,’ police at the scene said.

Police said the child ran into the path of a car in reverse. The driver was identified as John Stokes, 32, of Oley.

‘The child was underneath the car after the person had backed up,’ police said. ‘Church members lifted the car up and pulled the child out from underneath.’

According to police, Stokes stopped his volvo station wagon and several people lifted up the back end of the car in order to rescue the trapped child.

‘We are not sure if (Stokes) is a church member,’ police said.

Several church members and Amity Police officers performed CPR on Steinruck, police said.

Exeter EMS transported Steinruck to the Stonersville baseball fields where she was taken by medical helicopter to Reading Hospital, police said.

The Berks County Coroner’s office confirmed that Steinruck died at 9:05 p.m. at Reading Hospital.

The accident is still under investigation.
