The National 2013 Boy Scout Jamboree has kicked off in its new permanent home at Bechtel Summit in West Virginia.

Hundreds of local scouts will be attending the Jamboree, which is held every four years and lasts 10 days. The scouts will be experiencing new adventures like ziplining, whitewater rafting, and even a Navy SEAL challenge.

Local scout Robert Golden, 17, of Gilbertsville, who is attending the event with Troop 835, will be reporting live from the event as a Hometown News Correspondent, a new initiative being carried out by the scouting organization this year.

For the first time, Scouts are allowed to bring their smartphones and computers to the Jamboree and encouraged to report on their experiences for their local media back home, including radio, TV and newspapers. Golden will be reporting on his experiences and the experiences of other scouts for The Mercury on his Tumblr page at http://rgolden-335.tumblr.com/

Check back daily to see new photos and reports from this national event posted by Golden.
