The Pennsylvania Department of Education announced that the current version of the GED exam, 2002 Series GED test, will expire on Dec. 31, 2013, and will be replaced with the new 2014 Series GED test beginning Jan. 2, 2014.
Those who have started the 2002 Series GED test but have not completed all five parts have until Dec. 31, 2013, to pass any remaining sections.
Those who do not successfully complete all five parts by the end of 2013 will be required to start over again in 2014 with the new GED test in order to receive their high school credential. Partial scores from the current exam cannot be carried over to the new 2014 test.
The current version is available in both paper- and computer-based formats at approved testing centers across the state and cannot be completed online.
The 2014 GED test is more rigorous and a better indicator of high school equivalency and college and career readiness. The new test will have four parts and will only be available in the computer-based format. Paper-based testing will be available in limited cases where testing accommodations are required by an individual.
The department has been working with testing centers across the state in preparing for this change.
