Submitted Chippy the Chipmunk by Kathy Miller.

Author Kathy Miller spent two years photographing and observing “Chippy” the chipmunk in her garden. That series of photographs inspired her books Chippy Chipmunk: Parties in the Garden and the sequel, Chippy Chipmunk: Babies in the Garden.

Miller and “Chippy” will be visiting Firefly Bookstore in Kutztown on Friday, Sept. 6 from 5 to 8 p.m. This event is part of Firefly Bookstore’s 1-year anniversary celebration. She will be signing books and talking about her photography. Children will be able to meet and get their photo taken with “Chippy”

Parties in the Garden tells the story of a day in the life of Chippy the chipmunk in Miller’s backyard. The photographs in the book illustrate the chipmunk’s interactions with other animals, dangers that he faces and the regular life of a small backyard animal.

Miller’s books have won numerous awards, including the 2012 Independent Publisher Book Awards for Children’s Picture Book and she received two Silver medals in the 2012 Benjamin Franklin Awards.

Born and raised in Ottawa, Canada, Miller now lives in New Ringgold, with her husband.

With bachelor degrees in education and music, Miller has created and performed interactive school programs that have typically include a listening activity, nature photography tips, the story of Chippy projected on a screen and a hands-on burrow building simulation.

“I hope my book inspires children to spend time outdoors exploring nature,” says Miller. “Photography can be a fun way for kids to discover interesting things in their own backyard. Their own pictures can be used to create stories.”
