Amity shops evacuated after man found dead in his car

AMITY — Police confirmed Monday that a man found dead in his car behind the Ben Franklin Court Shopping Center prompted an evacuation of the shops Sunday afternoon.

Amity police said the man’s family had been contacted but no personal information about him would be released. Police did say that he was not from Berks County.

Around 3:30 p.m. Sunday, an employee from one of the shops found the man in the car, which was rented from Philadelphia, police said.

The method in which the man committed suicide warranted precautionary measures, police said. All of the shops, except for the CVS, were evacuated while police investigated.

In order to keep first responders safe from potentially hazardous chemicals inside the car, police said they deployed a robot. The robot broke a window in the car and nothing at the scene needed to be detonated by police or the robot, police said.

Police said they were not going to release details about the man committed suicide.

Emergency crews were on the scene until 7 p.m. Sunday.
