In 2008, four local Honey Brook women formed the HB Angels, a nonprofit group focused on raising money to go towards the Susan G. Komen breast cancer awareness fund. Through their efforts, the HB Angels were able to raise over $10,000 and participate in a three day walk through the streets of Philadelphia.
In 2012, with 12 members, the HB Angel organization held four annual fundraising events including a chicken barbeque and egg sale, a poker run/motorcycle ride, a motorcycle and car ride throughout Chester and Berks Counties and a chicken corn soup and hoagie sale. The proceeds from these events were able to provide two local families with financial support for their specific needs, and also supported The Angelman Syndrome and the Susan G. Komen funds.
Along with the Angels’ annual events, money was raised for a casino trip to Atlantic City, t-shirt and sweatshirt sales, raffles and Sheetz coupon book sales. With support from the community, family and friends, the HB Angels were able to raise a considerable amount of money towards various causes in need.
Today, in 2013, the HB Angels organization has grown to 14 dedicated, compassionate women who will continue to fundraise throughout the year to raise money for worthwhile causes. The Angels continue to support Susan G. Komen and will have four members participating in the 60 mile, three day walk in October.
Fundraisers held this year included a beef and beer, benefiting a local family with financial support when their daughter was in need of medical care following a premature birth, and two guest bartending events at the Bistro on 10 in Honey Brook, benefiting battered women in Berks County and the Saint Jude’s fund. There was a pancake breakfast held in April at the Honey Brook Lions Center benefiting a family in need of financial support with medical expenses. The Angels also held their annual fundraisers including the chicken barbeque and egg sale in March and the poker run/motorcycle ride through Pennsylvania and Maryland benefiting Angelman Syndrome over the summer.
There are still plenty of events to be held this year that need continued support. The annual Bikers for Boobies motorcycle and car ride was held Saturday, taking its participants through Lancaster County. T-shirts and hoodies are specifically designed to be sold for this event and are always available for purchase. All proceeds go towards the three day walk in October.
There is another guest bartending event planned at the Bistro on 10 on Sept. 25 from 6-9 p.m. and a two day event on Sept. 27 and 28 at the Texas Roadhouse in Exton. On Nov. 2, the Angels will charter buses once again and make the trip to Atlantic City for a casino trip and on Nov. 9 the annual chicken corn soup sale, made by Gina Myers, will take place.
