(Updated 1:52 p.m.) AMITY – An SUV traveling the wrong way on Route 422 struck an oncoming vehicle, killing a female driver early Saturday morning, police said.

Nicholas Fedchak, 27, of Stowe, was driving his 1999 Chevrolet Tahoe eastbound in the westbound lanes of Route 422 near Hill Road around 2:13 a.m., when the crash occurred, police said.

Fedchak’s SUV struck an oncoming 2001 Honda Accord driven by Rebecca Enriquez, 34, of West Reading, police said.

Enriquez was pronounced dead at the scene, according to the Berks County Coroner’s Office.

Fedchak was taken to Reading Hospital and Medical Center, West Reading, where he was listed in stable condition Saturday afternoon.

A hospital spokesperson said Fedchak is scheduled to have surgery Sunday, but would not comment on the type of operation or the extent of his injuries.

Police would not comment on whether alcohol or sleep deprivation were factors in the crash because the investigation is ongoing.

While police were conducting their preliminary investigation, Route 422 was closed until 8:30 a.m. Saturday, police said.

This was the second fatal crash this week along the same stretch of Route 422 in Amity.

On Monday, a 1997 Chevrolet van heading east on Route 422 near Monocacy Creek Road left the roadway, traveled through the parking lot of La Casa Musso restaurant, hit a tree and caught fire, police said.

The driver, Ashley Ortlip, 28, of Reading, died from thermal burns and blunt force trauma, according to the Berks County Coroner’s Office.

No other vehicles were involved in the Monday crash. Ortlip was the only person in the van.

An investigation into the cause of the earlier crash is continuing.
