The Boyertown football team was looking to bounce back after last week’s 48-10 loss to Methacton. After scoring over 100 points in the first two games, and then 10 last week, the Bears’ offense was also looking to get back on track.
However, Boyertown gave up big plays as Spring-Ford’s Dylan Jones (15 carries for 243) scored four touchdowns, including touchdown runs of 80 and 75 yards. The Rams defeated Boyertown, 41-14.
Cody Richmond had 29 carries for 94 yards for Boyertown. Quarterback Griffin Pasik was 12-for-28 for 107 yards with one touchdown and one interception. Tyler Zilen had five catches for 40 yards on the night. Dalton Hughes also had three receptions for 34 yards.
‘The team played hard, but Spring-Ford is a good team and their defense is good,’ said Boyertown head coach Mark Scisly. ‘Unfortunately, we didn’t take advantage in of our chances the first half, but I thought we played hard. We have some guys injured and we need to get some guys healthy.
‘That’s a good club. Spring-Ford held Perk Valley to seven points last week. ‘They’re a good defense.’
Boyertown started with the ball at its 18 yard line. The Bears drove down field, starting with an 11 yard run by Cody Richmond. The Bears got to the Rams’ 32 yard line, however, on fourth-and-one, Pasik was sacked for a two yard loss, and Spring-Ford took over on downs.
The Bears’ defense held the Rams offense to a three-and-out, then Boyertown continued moving the ball. The Bears got a big pass from Pasik to junior Andrew Bill for 13 yards. However, the Boyertown offense would be forced to punt.
Spring-Ford then went 80 yards for a 7-0 with 3:37 left in the first quarter.
On their next drive, the Rams’went 67 yards to increase their lead to 14-0.
The Bears got their best starting field position of the night at the Spring-Ford 29 yard line. Pasik handed off to Richmond who threw a half back option pass back to Pasik for 19 yards to the Spring-Ford 10 yard line. Two plays later, Pasik threw a five yard pass to Zilen for the Bears’ first touchdown of the night. Elijah Giorgio added the extra point to cut the Spring-Ford lead to 14-7 with 2:09 in the first half.
Spring-Ford attempted to punt the ball, but a bad snap saw Boyertown get the ball at the Rams’ 18 yard line. After a holding penalty gave the Bears the ball at the 32 yard line, Pasik had his pass intercepted by Jake Leahy The half ended with the Rams up by seven.
Spring-Ford started their first offensive series of the second half at their 20 yard line. On the first play from scrimmage Dylan Jones ripped off an 80 yard run along the side line for a touchdown. Gulati added the extra point to make the score 21-7.
In its next drive, Tyler Zilen recovered the fumble at the Rams 32 yard line. Unfortunately, the Bears were unable to take advantage of the Rams’ turnover, going three-and-out.
Spring-Ford then started at its 27 yard line. The third play from scrimmage saw Jarred Jones once again break free and ran 75 yards for a touchdown. Gulati added the extra point to make the score 28-7.
‘They have a pretty good running back (Jones), said Scisly. ‘He broke a couple on us, We got caught out of position and it kind of snowballed from there.’
Spring-Ford’s next scoring drive started on its 32 yard line. A 15 yard personal foul face mask penalty and a Leacraft 31 yard pass to Gary Hopkins got the Rams to the Boyertown 26 yard line. Later, Leacraft then found Hopkins for a 13 yard touchdown reception. Gulati added the extra point to make the score 35-7 with 7:23 left in the fourth quarter.
The Rams’ last touchdown drive started at the Boyertown 35 yard line. Leacraft threw a pass caught by Kyle Markey, however he fumbled the ball before crossing the end zone and Mason Lucas recovered the fumble for the touchdown. The extra point was blocked but the Rams led 41-7.
Boyertown added one more touchdown. The big play of the drive was a 17 yard reception by Tyler Zilen from Pasik to the Spring-Ford 37 yard line. Richmond punched it in from seven yards out end the scoring. ‘We’ve got to regroup next week,’ said Scisly. ‘We’ve got to get ready for Owen J. We have to keep our heads on straight, things will be fine.’
