‘Llamas are Cool’ will be the theme of this year’s open barn at Buck Hollow Llamas, Inc., 409 Buck Hollow Road, Birdsboro.
On Oct. 12, 10 a.m – 5 p.m., and Oct. 13, 12-5 p.m., there will be farm tours, walk a llama, educational sessions and fiber-related demonstrations.
Carol Reigh, owner of Buck Hollow Llamas, will be providing educational farm tours and an introduction to llama behavior and care to enlighten the public about these gentle and elegant creatures. For the more serious llama enthusiasts, specific questions will be answered on a one-to-one basis in addition to some educational demonstrations on how to catch, halter, toenail trim and more.
The public will also have a chance to touch and feel national award-winning fleeces, roving and yarn. For those particularly smitten with llamas, the opportunity to walk a llama is part of the experience.
Reigh has been raising llamas since 1997 and is eager to share her knowledge and offer a tour of her seven champion studs. Her herd consists of no more than 35 animals at a time.
There is also a new face in the herd without a name, so the public will have the opportunity to give this cria (baby llama) a name in the ‘Name the Llama’ contest.
The llama, which is one of the oldest domesticated animals in the world, is highly social and prefers the companionship of its own species. While llamas are comparatively easy to care for, a prospective owner must consider the need for shelter, fencing, food and veterinary care.
Buck Hollow Road connects Route 10 and Route 82. If you are on 10, look for the school buses, turn onto Buck Hollow Road and go 2.3 miles to the entrance of the drive.
