After the tragic death of Birdsboro Rotarian and pilot Dr. Carl R. Enlow, 69, community members share their memories of their friend.

Enlow, a resident of Reading, had over 50 years of experience as a pilot and previously served as a military helicopter pilot.

Enlow was working at the Bloomsburg Fair, giving rides when he was killed. According to Bill Barratt, superintendent of traffic police and parking for the fair, Enlow was struck by the rotor when he reentered the plane to speak to the replacement pilot.

Louis Apsokardu, a neighbor and dear friend, said Enlow helped him with flight lessons in the past. ‘He took me up several times,’ Apsokardu, a fellow pilot, shared.

According to Apsokardu, ‘Carl was one of the good guys.’

In addition to his work as a pilot, Enlow was very active in Birdsboro Rotary and served as a president from 1981 to 1982.

According to Apsokardu, Enlow especially loved the International Food and Wine Festival the group organized annually. The festival raises money for the local firemen and police stations and also provides scholarships for students of Daniel Boone.

As a ‘senior Rotarian,’ Enlow would meet socially with other members at the Breakfast Hut every Tuesday morning. ‘We would enjoy each other’s company. He was a great storyteller, and would share his great tales over ham and eggs,’ Mayor Bob Myers, Birdsboro said. Myers shared that he got to know Enlow 35 years ago through Rotary. ‘I always felt much better after having breakfast with Carl. There was not a kinder or gentler person.’

Enlow also had almost 40 years of practice as a chiropractic doctor and owned a business, Enlow Chiropractic, in Birdsboro.

Patients and friends would come into the restaurant and recognize Enlow, greeting him with ‘Hi Doc!’

Dr. Tyler McClimon was a colleague of Enlow, and also treated him as a patient. ‘Carl was a chiropractor who practiced chiropractic and that’s got to be commended,’ McClimon said. ‘He was a great chiropractor. We lost a great person in the community.’

In addition to his many interests and loves, is Carl’s wife Connie. Together, they would spend time at their second home in Florida.

Enlow is survived by his wife, two sisters and one brother.

A memorial fund has been established for his family. If you wish to donate, send your donation to the Bloomsburg Fair Association, 620 W. Third St., Bloomsburg.
