The Berks County District Attorney’s Office is filing charges in a fatal October 2012 crash that claimed the life of a Richmond Township woman.
According to a press release issued Friday, Oct. 4, Emilio A. Perez-Pazmino will be charged with homicide by vehicle, recklessly endangering another person, careless driving, driving a vehicle at safe speed, involuntary manslaughter, and aggravated assault by vehicle.
Perez-Pazmino was driving the tractor-trailer that caused the 6:35 a.m. crash on Oct. 22, 2012, that killed Lauren A. Boyer, 45, and injured several people.
According to a report in The Kutztown Area Patriot, the crash involved two commercial vehicles, a pickup truck, an SUV and a sedan, and caused the highway to be shut down for eight hours while the scene was investigated and cleared.
A preliminary investigation of the crash determined that one of the tractor-trailers, and the three private vehicles were stopped on Route 222 south because of slow traffic when the tractor-trailer driven by Perez-Pazmino plowed into them at 55 miles per hour, Sgt. Ronald Mohl of the Northern Berks Regional Police told the Kutztown Area Patriot at the time.
The tractor-trailer struck the back of the pickup truck, pushing it onto its side and into the rear of the SUV, police said. The SUV landed upside down and was pushed partly into the semi-trailer of the other tractor-trailer, police said. The tractor-trailer was pushed forward into the sedan, police said. The pickup and SUV were crushed and the occupants trapped inside, according to the news report.
The male driver of the pickup was rescued and flown to Lehigh Valley Hospital. He was not identified.
Boyer, who was driving the SUV, was pronounced dead at the scene.
The drivers of the tractor-trailer and SUV were taken to area hospitals for treatment of minor injuries.
Boyer was the service manager for Bob Fisher Chevrolet in Reading, according to her obituary published in The Mercury. She was married to Christopher R. Boyer and attended Kutztown University. She was a competitive auto racer and a former member of the East Coast 4 Wheel Drive Association and County Line 4x4 Roughriders.
