On Friday night, Boyertown and Pottstown met in a wild affair. The Bears overcame a 20-7 deficit outdueled the Trojans, 49-34.
‘Their strength is speed and it’s our weakness,’ said Boyertown coach Mark Scisly after his team racked up 529 total yards while allowing 385. ‘Their weakness is the front and it’s our strength. Hats off to them. For a 0-5 team, they came to play.’
The Bears were led by Griffin Pasik who threw for 192 yards(10-for-14), two touchdowns passes three TDs running. He also had 115 yards rushing.
Nick Brough had seven catches for 148 yards. Cody Richmond had 134 yards rushing on 30 carries.
Boyertown started with the ball and went to work. Starting at their own 31 yard line, Boyertown put together a 10-play drive. Pasik threw a screen pass to Cody Richmond who ran 26 yards for a first down at the Pottstown 15 yard line. Two plays later, Richmond ran it in from two yards out. Elijah Giorgio added the extra point to put them up 7-0 with 8:47 in the first quarter. Pottstown would answered back with a scoring drive of its own – a seven play drive that spanned over 3:45 seconds. Gary Wise threw a 24 yard strike to junior wide out John Charles. Bryant Wise extra point was no good but the Bears led 7-6.
The Trojans scored two more times to tak a 20-7 lead.
Boyertown would answer right back with a scoring drive of its own. It was an 11-play drive cappted by a 19 yard touchdown run by Richmondd. Giorgio added the extra point to cut the lead to 20-14 with 2:32 left in the second quarter.
Boyertown caught Pottstown by surprise with an onside kick as Alex Baldassarre recovered the kick. That gave the Bears a first down at the Pottstown 41 yard line. On the first play from scrimmage, Pasik threw a pass to Brough who ran it in for a 41 yard touchdown. The extra point hit the left goal post, but Boyertown tied the game 20-20. With 2:21 left before halftime.
‘Nick had a great game,’ said Scisly. ‘Pasik had a great game. It seems like they both got on the same page tonight. His (Pasik) passes were right on the money.’
The Boyertown defense held on Pottstown’s first drive of the second half, forcing the Trojans to punt. Boyertown lineman Tyler Zilen got a piece of the punt, giving the Bears excellent field position at the Pottstown 46 yard line. Richmond ran 11 yards to the Pottstown 27 yard line. On the next play from scrimmage, Pasik threw a pass to Brough for the 27 yard touchdown. Boyertown missed the extra point but they led 26-20.
Pottstown answered right back. On the third play from scrimmage, Wise threw a pass to Denzel Harvey for a 60 yard touchdown. Bryant Wise added the extra point as the Trojans reclaimed the lead, 27-26.
The Bears wouldn’t panic, putting together a scoring drive of its own. The Bears converted two fourth downsand scored on a one-yard run by Pasik.
The Trojans were looking to answer back. A 21 pass play from Wise to Harvey gave them a first down at the Boyertown 49. The Bears were also called for a 15 yard personal foul, roughing the passer penalty, giving Pottstown a first down at the 33 yard line. The Trojans’ offense got to the Bears’ 24 yard. On a fourth-and-one, the Bears’ defense held giving them the ball.
The Bears added two more scores to win the game going away. Pottstown added a score of its own, but wasn’t able to complete a comeback. The Boyertown offense was just too much for them.
