ARL gathers donations for community

The Animal Rescue League of Berks County will be giving free cat and dog food to owners in need the week of Oct. 14.

Any dog or cat owner with a need for food is invited to stop at the Animal Rescue League located at 58 Kennel Road in Mohnton for free cat and/or dog food during normal business hours beginning Monday, Oct. 14 through Friday, Oct. 18, or as long as supplies last.

The ARL will also be in the city of Reading on Thursday, Oct. 17 at Dr. Rude’s Animal Clinic located at 813 Elm Street where pet owners can pick up food between the hours of noonand 2p.m. Both canned and dry varieties will be given away.

The ARL is able to offer this chance to the community due to a recent donation of high-quality pet food from Pet Food Experts in Lancaster, Pa. Other food donated, while very welcome and appreciated, can sometimes aggravate allergies and digestive sensitivities in certain shelter animals.

Therefore, as long as we have an availability of food from the PFE, which is compatible with all of our animals and their needs, the ARL wishes to share their excess food with community members who might be struggling to make ends meet and ensure that no dog or cat goes hungry.

This opportunity is only while supplies last. Dog owners will receive one bag of food for every licensed animal in their household.

No license, no problem! Licenses will be for sale at both locations.

Cat owners will receive one bag and 12 cans of food per household.

The ARL is open Monday and Friday 11 a.m. – 5 p.m., Tuesday and Thursday, 11 a.m. – 8p.m., Saturday 11a.m. – 3p.m. and is closed on Wednesdays. The Animal Rescue League of Berks County is the only open admission shelter in Berks County accepting an average of 10,000 animals annually. The shelter runs at maximum capacity throughout the year, providing adoption programs, spay/neuter clinics, community outreach, education, animal welfare investigation, and more.

The ARL’s mission is to impact all aspects of humane treatments of animals through quality service, accommodation and education of pet owners and the community.
