Valley Preferred, a provider-owned, preferred provider organization aligned with Lehigh Valley Health Network, celebrates 20 years in October.
In 1993, local health care planners laid out the blueprint for a preferred provider organization, or PPO, naming the new entity Valley Preferred. During that era, HMOs and the term “managed care” ruled the day in health care. Today, the key terms are “health care reform” and “accountable care.” But with these continued changes in health care, Valley Preferred has remained constant with its original mission: To ensure high value health care, satisfied patients and positive outcomes at an affordable cost.
Valley Preferred has grown its network to 18 hospitals and 4,100 physicians, expanding throughout 11 counties in eastern Pennsylvania. Known as a leading physician-driven, preferred provider organization, Valley Preferred holds a national reputation for clinically innovative programs aimed at improving health care delivery and value.
“We have sustained two decades of success by staying focused on our founding mission,” said Valley Preferred Executive Director, Jack A. Lenhart, MD. “Through the years, we have developed and launched numerous programs proven to advance the quality and efficiency of patient care. We have been guided by the logic of our own problem-solving capabilities and the determination of our member physicians. Today, Valley Preferred has a wealth of assets which are making measurable differences in health care quality, cost management and value.”
Among the programs developed by Valley Preferred are:
BeneFITSM Corporate Wellness: a leader in wellness programs serving employers throughout the eastern Pennsylvania region. BeneFIT recently was awarded NCQA Wellness & Health Promotion Accreditation.
Achieving Clinical Excellence: a series of clinically integrated initiatives to reward physicians for meeting evidenced-based outcomes for prevention and chronic diseases.
Disease management programs: designed to provide specialized care for patients with the most prevalent chronic conditions, including diabetes, asthma, congestive heart failure, obesity, coronary artery disease and other diseases. In 2011, the programs, provided regionally by Lehigh Valley Health Network, earned NCQA Disease Management Certification.
Currently, Valley Preferred is at the vanguard of changing the face of regional health care through its active involvement in population health management, support for primary care physicians, and continued efforts toward the “triple aim.”
