Bailey Wood Products, Inc. dates back to its first log sale for a company started by owner Jeffrey Schucker’s great-grandfather Howard Bailey in 1928. A fire in 2005 changed their focus to be a supplier of specialty wood products.

In an article posted on Bailey Wood’s website at www.baileywp.com, Albany Township native Lester Bailey shares his memories, ‘The previous winter Hank and his father, Howard Bailey, had cut some mature oak trees on the farm woodland, dragged the logs with horses, and hauled them to the roadside by wagon … Money was scarce, timber was plentiful, but demand was very low.Hank heard a Model T Ford chugging up the road and watched as it stopped by the pile of logs … ‘Are these logs for sale?’… This was the first sale of timber … and the start of Bailey Lumber Company.’

In 1997, Bailey Lumber Company incorporated and allowed the business to grow. The name changed to Bailey Wood Products, Inc.

‘Late at night on Dec. 30, 2005 tragedy struck as we watched the flames rise up from the roof of the sawmill building,’ writes Lester.

‘After contemplating his options Jeff decided to focus on the core competency of the business, the kiln drying and retail sector of the business. The fire did not affect that portion of the operation and continued to function,’ writes Lester.

‘The fire has brought forth new challenges and opportunities. We look forward to meetings those challenges and keeping the spirit of determination strong that has kept the company alive over the decades,’ writes Lester.

Their goal is to make the community aware of all the products and services available. Bailey Wood is a supplier and manufacturer of quality kiln dried hardwood lumber, custom hardwood flooring, moldings for new construction and restoration, timbers for barn and timber frame construction, mantles, decking for porches and outside decks, wood for furniture, cabinetry, crafts and industrial applications. Their market is now national.

Justin Smith is retail manager and Dan Bowen handles sales.

Bailey Wood will host their Fall Woodworker’s Fair at their site 441 Mountain Road, Kempton, Nov. 2 and 3 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Includes woodworkers’ booths, food vendors, and the Woodcraft Store of Allentown.
