In the days before Governor Mifflin’s Homecoming, students at the high school will be asked to keep vehicle safety at the center of their celebrations. Governor Mifflin High School has partnered with State Farm Insurance and local agent June Houck for the ‘Celebrate My Drive’ campaign, a national initiative that offers $100,000 grants to schools that garner the most support for safe driving.

On Thursday, Oct. 10 and Friday, Oct. 11, Houck will visit high school health classes and offer an eye-opening presentation about the dangers of reckless and distracted driving. Then, in conjunction with National Teen Driver Safety Week, Governor Mifflin students, faculty and staff will encourage everyone in the community age 14 and older, to make a safe driving pledge through Celebrate My Drive. Each pledge made during the week of October 18-26 counts as one vote for Governor Mifflin High School, which will compete with other like-size schools nationwide for the most votes and the grand prize of $100,000.

‘We have worked with our local State Farm agent, June Houck, for several years to promote safe driving as part of our high school health classes,’ said Amy Hatlee, high school health teacher.

‘When I saw this opportunity to earn some money for our safe driving effort and spread the message in the community, it seemed like a win-win.’

In addition to encouraging support for safe driving in health classes, those attending the Homecoming football game on October 18 will be asked to pledge their support during a special presentation at the game. The Governor Mifflin football coaching staff will also show their support by wearing Celebrate My Drive shirts during the game.

According to State Farm claims data, the highest number of injury or collision claims filed by 16- and 17-year-old drivers peaks during the month of October, spiking by approximately 15 percent compared to other months during the year.
