LOWER POTTSGROVE – A Boyertown Area School District van was involved in a crash in Lower Pottsgrove Wednesday morning, police and school district officials said.

The Dodge van was transporting a Boyertown student to a private placement in Lower Pottsgrove around 8 a.m. when it was hit by an oncoming Toyota on Bleim Road near North Pleasantview Road, township police said.

Matthew G. Fox, 18, of Sanatoga, was westbound on the busy street when his car crossed into oncoming traffic.

The two vehicles hit head on after Fox’s car crossed the double yellow lines, police said.

The student and the driver of the school van were both transported to Pottstown Memorial Medical Center via ambulance, police said.

David Szablowski, business administrator for the Boyertown Area School District, said the student was examined and released.

According to police, Fox was also transported to the hospital after complaining of injuries.

Szablowski said the district followed procedure and notified the parents of the student.

After a preliminary investigation, police said they believe speed played a factor in the crash but distracted driving did not.

Police and school officials said Steve Missimer, a school district representative, went to the crash.

‘Given the volume of our vehicles on the road, there is always a chance of a crash, but they have been scarce,’ Szablowski said.

He could not comment on the extent of the damage to the school van.

Police said Fox was issued a careless driving citation.

The busy intersection was closed for approximately 45 minutes while the crash was investigated and the scene was cleared, police said.

Both vehicles were towed from the scene, police said.
