Judy Henry loves to host special events at her restaurant, Judy’s on Cherry, but when she heard her Centre Park neighbor and friend Jim Hubbard was set to lose his home, she knew immediate action was in order. According to Judy, Jim had told her that after a lifetime of traveling the globe, “no place feels like home as much as Reading.” She is opening her restaurant for a Sunday night supper and auction Nov. 24 that will benefit Hubbard.
Eighty-nine year old documentary producer Jim Hubbard and Judy have been friends since Jim and his late wife Anne Heimann moved from Manhattan to Centre Park in 2002. Annewas an accomplished photographer and a prolific, talented painter who passed in 2011.
Jim wanted to have Anne’s collection of work recognized. Over the years, Anne’s art had appeared in National Geographic, Natural History, Smithsonian, as well as a Reading Public Museum 2010 exhibition. Jim had worked with a network of artists and organizations in search of a place that would accept but also show the work, but with limited success. The extensive collection ranges from stunning photographic pieces, to intimate, but precise paintings and quirky three-dimensional pieces incorporating found materials and her own weavings.
Judy immediately reached out to her business network, a social worker, Jim’s family and friends and soon formed a committee in the hope Jim could remain in the place so close to his heart. The Jim Hubbard Sustenance Fund was created to manage donations. Heimann’s works were installed at the restaurant creating quite a buzz and donations started to arrive.
Auctioneer Dick Henry will conduct a live art auction Sunday evening starting at 7p.m. offering over 20 fine works by Anne and local artists including Barbara Thun, Kristen Woodward, Dan Schlenker and David “Big Dutch” Nally. Tickets can be purchased in advance from Judy’s on Cherry for the evening starting with cocktails at 4p.m. Judy is continuing to accept monetary donations and process absentee bidder forms for those unable to attend the Nov. 24 event. Artists are donating 50-100 percent of the hammer price to the fund.
