This school year, Twin Valley Elementary Center’s (TVEC) Reading Is Fundamental (RIF) program used the theme “Oceans of the World” to introduce TVEC students to the five oceans that span Earth. Special home and school activities were conducted during the school year to learn about the oceans and the creatures that inhabit them, and ways to keep our oceans clean. Using a “Finding Nemo” theme for the school year, research projects, games and assemblies were a part of the learning process.

In an effort to teach the TVEC students about “the Raider Way” and always giving back, TVEC students had a “penny war” and raised $426.92 for the Chesapeake Bay Foundation. The monies raised will be used to grow native oysters.

RIF is the largest children’s literacy nonprofit in the United States. It prepares and motivates children to read by delivering free books and literacy resources to those children and families who need them most. It aims to inspire children to be lifelong readers through the power of choice.

Each year, TVEC students are given three new, free books to keep.
