Area residents flocked to the 63rd Annual Oley Fair this past weekend which entertained people of all ages.
A week before the fair, Ruscombmanor resident Sarah Harris, who won the department trophy for the Junior Foods Category last year, said the Oley Fair is more “country” than Kutztown and Reading.
The Oley Fair presented a variety of competitions including tractor pulls, lamb trimming and blocking and goat judging.
It was quite noisy over in the livestock area which housed pigs, sheep, cows and goats. The pigs were the most “talkative” of the animals.
Oley students were not the only ones showing their animals.
Amy Bennecoff of Northwestern Lehigh was showing some pigs at this year’s fair. She said she has been raising them since she’s been really little.
In addition, Fleetwood High School student Kristen Folk showed her goats, Curly and Sampson.
Folk said it was her first time in the goat competition.
She became interested in raising goats because her parents have a farm.
“I like the goats’ different personalities,” Folk said, adding that most of the goats she has had have been friendly.
If witnessing the sheep shearing contest didn’t strike attendees fancies, they could visit the various commercial exhibits and speak with community members.
The younger generation seemed to enjoy the rides and the opportunity to walk around with their families and friends.
A fair wouldn’t be a fair without the food. Many people were seen with funnel cake in their hands. Other testaments of people loving the food are the long lines at the stands.
