Firefly Bookstore, Kutztown, welcomes back author and illustrator Jonathan Bean, a native of Fleetwood, celebrating the publication of his newest title, “Big Snow”. Firefly is holding the author event in the store on Dec. 6, when Mr. Bean will be meeting his many readers and signing his books.

“Big Snow”, written and illustrated by Bean, features the story of a young boy’s excitement as he waits for a winter storm to cover his world with white, fluffy snow. He tries to be patient and “help” his mother clean the house. But he keeps being distracted, checking outside to see how much snow has fallen. After his lunch he falls asleep and dreams of the snow filling his house.

“Big Snow” is a seasonal title, but the story is timeless, reminding of the changes that the seasons bring, and particularly of the irresistible anticipation of the coming snow. The illustrations of the young protagonist’s town may be familiar to many local inhabitants.

The book’s dust jacket notes that the author was inspired by both his own childhood and that of his nephews.

Publisher’s Weekly wrote in a starred review, “This is another terrific offering from Bean (Building Our House); his subtly rhythmic prose and elegant, astute watercolors hit just the right notes of comedy, suspense, and fantasy.” (9/24/2013)

According to http://www.jonathanbean.com/bioset.html, Jonathan grew up in Pennsylvania where he enjoyed, among many things, hiking, bird watching, and drawing the landscape. After receiving his undergraduate degree from Messiah College he attended graduate school at the School of Visual Arts in New York City.

Bean has worked for numerous publishers and his illustrations and writing have received widespread recognition. Jonathan currently lives in Harrisburg.

Bean’s previous book, “Building Our House”, was a New York Times Book Review Editors’ Choice, and was winner of the 2013 Boston Globe Horn Book Award for Best Picture Book.

“At Night”, the first book he wrote and illustrated, won the Boston Globe Horn Book Award and the Charlotte Zolotow Honor Award for writing. His illustrations for “The Apple Pie that Papa Baked” won the Ezra Jack Keats Award for new talent and Publisher’s Weekly named him “a newcomer to watch”.

The author signing will be held at Firefly Bookstore from 6 to 8 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 6. There will be activities for children and light refreshments. Jonathan Bean’s other titles including “Building Our House” and his Christmas title “One Starry Night” will be available for purchase. Please contact Firefly Bookstore for more information.
