Boyertown photographer wins Judges' Choice Award in Schuylkill Shots Photo Contest

To celebrate its 10 year anniversary, the Schuylkill Action Network invited photographers of all ages and abilities to submit photographs in its second-annual Schuylkill Shots Photo Contest.

This year, Martha Gery of Boyertown was selected at the winner of the Judges’ Choice Award in the Wild and Scenic category of this year’s contest.

There were three categories for which to submit: Wild and Scenic, Fun on the Schuylkill, and Tip Top Tap. A panel of judges then selects ten finalists for each category, then the public is invited to vote online in order to determine the winner. Judges also choose their favorite through the Judges’ Choice Award.

In addition to being a favorite of the judge’s, Gery’s photo captured more than 70 online votes from the public.


Born and raised in Boyertown, Gery says she is always seeking to support small towns such as Boyertown and Phoenixville.

Gery, who says she doesn’t normally enter photo contests, decided to enter this year into to support the river. In general, she enjoys taking photos from her kayak.

“I’ve been getting involved in local events,” said Gery. “It’s important to support local towns and the community.”

Embracing in her love of for photography for several years, Gery is now a member of the photography enthusiast group based out of Boyertown. She also does photography for local groups and organizations—donated work—as way to remain ‘community-minded.’

The Schuylkill Action Network kicked off this annual Schuylkill Shots Photo Contest on July 1. Submissions were accepted via Facebook up through October. Photographs of high quality which depict the beauty and enjoyment of the Schuylkill River were requested as entries.
