An evening of music will be held on Saturday, April 4 at the Fivepointville Fire Hall, Route 897 in Fivepointville.
Featured will be Nu-Blu. Hailing from the bluegrass lands of North Carolina, Nu-Blu was founded in 2003 by the husband and wife team of Carolyn and Daniel Routh.
The band is quickly making a name for themselves in the bluegrass world. In 2010 they were awarded the “Country Band of the Year” by the Carolina Music Awards. That was the year they also signed with Pinecastle Records.
Carolyn and Daniel make up half of this “hard driving” band. Gospel, Country, Blues and Rock and Roll all shaped and expanded Carolyn’s vocal style. Daniel began playing guitar at age 15. Banjo soon followed. In 2003, Carolyn suffered two strokes. She lost her speech and the use of her right side. After months of rehab, she began playing and singing again. With Carolyn playing bass, handling lead vocals and most of the tenor, she gives the band flexibility and a driving edge that sets them apart. Daniel plays the guitar focusing on different styles of the guitar and incorporates them in his playing. He also contributes lead and harmony vocals.
When Levi Austin was 9 years old, he went to a Sunday evening church service that included a bluegrass gospel group. After watching and hearing the banjo during the concert, Levi instantly fell in love with the instrument. Years later, after winning the N.C. State banjo championship, he toured with the Cagle Family Band for several years. He joined Nu-Blu in 2005. During these years with the band, he has added to his titles by winning the Galax Fiddler’s Convention Banjo award, along with numerous other banjo and guitar awards.
Austin Koerner’s grandfather took him to a bluegrass show when he was 11 years old and he immediately fell in love with the mandolin but was playing drums in metal bands. He also played the trumpet and French horn in his high school band. In the spring of 2007, he started to play the mandolin regularly and began learning theory. Austin’s multi instrument talent and performing in various music genres has certainly made him an asset to Nu-Blu.
Appearing with Nu-Blu will be Chester Johnson & The Foggy Mountain Grass with Scott Eager. Doors open at 5 p.m. Music at 6 p.m. Food is available by the Fivepointville Fire Company including their cheeseburger soup. Donations to attend, 12 and under are free.
