The works of more than 80 student artists of all ages from the Governor Mifflin School District will be on public display at Berks County Community Foundation headquarters starting Sunday, March 15.

The exhibit is the second of a series showcasing Berks County students’ artwork. An exhibit featuring Tulpehocken Area School District students was on display from November to February.

An opening reception to recognize Governor Mifflin students’ talents will be held Sunday from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. at the Community Foundation. Light refreshments will be provided.

The exhibits are a way for the community to show support for art and school programs.

“Art and music continue to be among the first targets of budget cuts for school districts, but those programs are beloved by students and parents and they are a crucial component of a well-rounded curriculum,” said Kevin K. Murphy, Community Foundation president.

Studies have shown that art and music programs influence academic achievement, civic engagement, critical thinking and other important characteristics.

“The eventual goal of this program is to showcase artwork from all 18 public school districts in Berks County, and perhaps from some other institutions, and then we will start rotating through our list again,” said Frances A. Aitken, Community Foundation senior vice president for finance and operations.

As manager of the Foundation’s building operations, Aitken coordinates installation of the exhibits.

The exhibit is the result of the work of Governor Mifflin students and their art teachers, Jonna Holgate and Barbara Guenter, and parent volunteer Sandra Chute.

The free exhibit will be open to visitors Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.
