The community is invited to enjoy a family event at the new Althouse Arboretum in Upper Pottsgrove Township on Friday night, Oct. 23. Parking will be available at the Hillside Aquatic Club on Moyer Road, and a shuttle will take families to the Arboretum. There will be a short hike through candle-lit trails with storytellers presenting the theme “Circle of Life” from the Lion King. After the walk, visitors can enjoy a marshmallow roast by the bonfires, food, drinks and children’s games and activities. The event is designed for young children as a fun and educational alternative to traditional Halloween activities. Families can stop by any time between 6 and 9 p.m. There is a charge. All participants are asked to bring their own flashlights.

The GreenAllies, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, is working with high school students from Pottsgrove High School’s Spark the Wave Club to sponsor the event. The Spark the Wave Club is the local chapter of a community service organization looking to make an impact by empowering teens to volunteer.

Althouse Arboretum, located at 1794 Gilbertsville Road (at the intersection of Snyder Road) is a newly constructed community environmental education center and preservation site on Upper Pottsgrove Township open space land. It is open to the public for hiking and will become an outdoor education destination for schools and community groups. The Arboretum is funded solely through grants and donations through the GreenAllies organization.
