“Transitory Collective,” a show of woodcut and linoleum prints by 11 local artists known for their work in other disciplines, is coming to Studio B in Boyertown. The exhibit from their first print exchange opens Thursday, Sept. 1, 5-8:00 p.m. and runs through Sunday, Sept. 11.
Participating artists include Susan Biebuyck, Miles DeCoster, Liz Edwards, Suzanne Fellows who spearheaded and organized the exhibit, Amy Forsyth, Sarah Gersbach, Sharon McGinley, Suzanne Molyneux, Abby Ryder, Lauralynn White, and Kristen T. Woodward.
Printed collaboratively, the only criteria for this exhibit is the orientation of the matching frames. Each hand-made print in this exhibit is from an edition of twenty-five. Each artist chose his/her own theme. Unframed, signed prints will be available.
“For our initial printmaking collective, I chose artists known to have some printmaking background and then I sprinkled in a few others whose work I admire and who are also connected to the Goggleworks in one way or another,” Fellows explained. “Due to the size limitations of our inaugural exhibit, only 11 artists were invited to participate,” she continued.
“The unseen component of this exhibit is the print exchange: each artist printed an edition of 25 prints and traded prints with each other artist in the collaborative. We have discussed making collagraph prints next year-something smaller so we can add a few more artists,” Fellows concluded.
At Studio B, the prints and plates will be exhibited in pairs. Artists’ talks, demonstrations, and workshops illuminating the process will be announced. The schedule of offerings can be found on www.studiobbb.org or Studio B on Facebook.
The process: a relief print is made by printing the surface of the “matrix” with ink to transfer an image. “Matrix” is the term used by printmakers for whatever surface is used. Surfaces can be wood, metal, linoleum, for example. The artist carves away the wood or linoleum bits that allow the paper to show though.
A printmaking collective is a group of artists who print together and exhibit together-often centered at a cooperative printing studio. This particular collective is made of artists from both the Goggleworks and the extended art community.
Studio B is located at 39A East Philadelphia Avenue in Boyertown.
