The iconic Colonial Theatre in Phoenixville welcomes movie lovers to its newly constructed wing on Friday, May 12.
The adjacent historic building was originally built to serve as the Bank of Phoenixville but is best known as the former home of the Phoenix and Daily Republican newspapers. Under construction since April ’17, it was purchased in 2011 via funds raised and contributed by generous donors.
“Our members and the community have been waiting so patiently for this day,” said Mary Foote, Executive Director of the Association for the Colonial Theatre. “Rather than simply say ‘We’re open’, we decided to invite everyone to come celebrate this historic event with a series of special movie screenings! Our celebratory theme is movies that focus on Hollywood and filmmaking – with a few award-winning crowd pleasers thrown in for good measure.”
The festivities kick off Friday with our three new first-run features “Their Finest,” “The Lost City of Z” and “Your Name: and a special 35mm screening of “Get Shorty.” Then on Saturday, May 13, in addition to our features, the Colonial presents the 2nd Annual Joel’s Fried Gold Film Fest featuring free screenings of “The Lego Movie,” “The Wild Bunch” and “L.A. Confidential.” On Sunday, May 14, in honor of Mother’s Day, the theatre presents free screenings of the classic films “Marty” and “Singin’ in the Rain.”
“We didn’t want the excitement to end after the weekend,” said Programming Director Kirsten Van Vlandren, “so we’re hosting more celebratory classic film screening throughout the week, including ‘Cinema Paradiso,’ ‘Sunset Boulevard’ and encore presentations of ‘Singin’ in the Rain’ and ‘Get Shorty!’ “
The new wing of the Colonial showcases a spacious lobby, a 30′ concession stand with a selection of beer and wine, and two new theatres: a 174-seat stadium-seating theatre and an intimate 65-seat Luxe theatre.
