What’s the deal with all the organ concerts?

Longwood founder Pierre du Pont was an organ aficionado who, in 1930, replaced the original organ with a larger, custom-designed Aeolian model that remains in Longwood’s Conservatory. Composed of 10,010 pipes, divided into 146 ranks, the Longwood Organ is, according to the gardens’ website, the largest Aeolian organ ever constructed in a residential setting.

Where is Longwood Gardens? The address is 1001 Longwood Road, Kennett Square. It’s near Route 1 in Kennett Township. As of Oct. 1, general hours will be 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Sundays through Thursdays and 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays (except for Oct. 7).

I heard something about Longwood Gardens extending the Fountain Garden season. What does that mean?

After a two-year revitalization, the Main Fountain Garden returned in May with a season of fountain shows, concerts and other special events. Due to guest requests, the series of Main Fountain Garden performances has been extended from the end of September to Oct. 31.

The fountains will “perform” 12-minute shows daily at 11 a.m. and 1, 3 and 5 p.m.

During extended evening hours on Oct. 6, 13, 14, 20, 21, 27 and 28, the fountains perform at 6:30 p.m., followed by a 30-minute Illuminated Fountain Performance set to music at 7:30 p.m. On those dates, admission is via timed tickets.
