The Reading Symphony Orchestra will host an inaugural celebratory event on Sunday, May 6, at 5:00 p.m. at the Neag Planetarium at the Reading Public Museum. Titled “Desserts – Harmony in Red” (after the famous Matisse painting), the event will honor Berks County philanthropists Sandy Solmon and Doug Messinger.
“We chose Sandy and Doug because of their extreme support of the symphony and all that they do for the community,” said event chair and RSO Board member Deanna Reuben.
The evening will include a cocktail hour with a jazz trio, seated dinner with food by Willoughby’s on Park, and an intimate recital with pianist Ilya Yakushev, the featured soloist with the RSO the previous evening. The event also includes desserts from Sweet Street Desserts and live and silent auctions.
Former Mayor of Reading Tom McMahon serves as honorary chair, and Dr. Robin Altman will emcee the evening.
In future years, the RSO plans to honor a special person or couple that has demonstrated philanthropic efforts to both the orchestra and to the community.

Since 1913, the Reading Symphony Orchestra has been providing uninterrupted access to exceptional classical music to the citizens of Berks County and beyond. Throughout the past 105 years as one of the nation’s continuously operating symphonies, the RSO has performed masterworks from Bach to Beethoven, and many more, and has been joined by illustrious guest soloists including pianists Yuja Wang and Fabio Bidini, violinist Midori, and guitarist Jason Vieaux.
