After 35 years in business, Jackie & Daughter Flower Shop in Kutztown announced their retirement. An open house and retirement party will be held 3 to 8 p.m. on Nov. 18 at the flower shop. The public is invited to enjoy food and spirits.

“We had a really big party when we opened, so we want to have a big party when we close,” said owner Shawn Brown CFD, Kutztown.

Brown said they want to thank customers for 35 years and they want to celebrate their retirement.

“Being in Kutztown, beyond the customers, I think the thing that I’ve most enjoyed was working with other merchants and the spirit of the merchants to work together and to have events to really make downtown a nice place,” she said. “I think it’s changed a lot in 35 years that we’ve been here.”

The florist enjoyed getting to know people’s families through floral arranging.

“We do the weddings, then the babies, anniversaries... We go through this life cycle with people as customers,” said Brown. “Those are the neat things.”

She will miss the people most.

“We have people who come in here and just hang out here. They all have their stories,” said Brown. “I think I’ll miss the excitement of the business, too, the events and weddings. It’s a lot of work and anxiety but it’s also very exciting.”

Brown said they hope to official close the shop by Dec. 31. In the mean time, prices have been reduced on everything. There will be an opportunity to shop at the retirement party but Brown said customers do not have to wait until the party to take advantage of the lower prices.

“We’re grateful to everyone for being such loyal customers,” said Brown. “Kutztown’s been great but we’re ready to move on.”

Brown said she does not know what she will be doing after retirement.

“There are so many things available to me,” she said.
