Kutztown >> Berks Gas Truth has already filled two buses and is close to filling a third set to head to the People’s Climate March taking place in New York City on Sept. 21.

“We’re joining hundreds of thousands of people from across the continent to tell world leaders heading to NYC that the time for decisive action on climate change is yesterday,” said Karen Feridun, of Kutztown, founder of Berks Gas Truth.

The People’s Climate March is a response to the UN Climate Summit called by Ban-Ki Moon in order to prepare for reaching a global climate deal and developing emission reduction commitments by the 2015 UN Climate Negotiations.

“Those of us in the anti-fracking movement see the march as an opportunity to make shale gas a part of the climate discussion in a way it hasn’t been previously,” said Feridun.

Berks Gas Truth is a grassroots organization of concerned citizen who are opposed to shale gas development. It is one of the groups that will be attending the People’s Climate March, organized by a coalition of indigenous communities, labor groups, environmental and social justice organizations.

“Climate science tells us that we only have a handful of years left if we are to avoid crossing the line of no return, represented by a 2 degree planetary temperature increase since the begin of the 20th century. We’ve already raised it one degree and it’s going to take far less than another century to raise it the second degree,” said Feridun.

The march is attracting people from all over the continent and is set to bring together several hundreds of thousands of people to the streets of New York City.

“Our message will be clear. The time has come for the transition to clean, renewable energy. If we’re to avoid climate catastrophe, then the fossil fuels in the ground need to stay there,” said Feridun.
