The Borough of Boyertown in cooperation with Building A Better Boyertown was recently awarded a TreeVitalize grant to plant 21 trees in the Borough.

Working closely with the Borough, and Rick Hartlieb, state forester the tree committee submitted a grant request to plant a total of 21 trees during this fall season. Seventeen shade trees will be placed in the Inner Core Parking Lot in the downtown, three street trees will replace others on North Reading Avenue and one street tree will go on East Fourth Street.

The planting event, orginally slated for Saturday, Nov. 1, has been pushed to the rain date of Saturday, Nov. 8, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

The BBB Tree Committee and the Borough have been working together for over ten years to improve the tree canopy of the Borough of Boyertown. TreeVitalize grants which are made available through a partnership with Pennsylvania’s Department of Conservation and Natural Resources (DCNR ) provide excellent opportunities for small communities with limited resources to participate in larger statewide initiatives to improve the downtown appeal and the biodiversity of our urban areas.

Once again, volunteers from the BBB Tree Committee, Boyertown Area Senior High School, and Boy Scout Troop 503 and others will be on hand to quickly and efficiently dig the required tree pits. These volunteers will receive free pizza and bottled water donated by local businesses. All trees will be provided by Harmony Hills Nursery in Downingtown.

Each tree will be provided with a 5 gallon “Gator Bag” which allows for the slow release of water without rapid evaporation while the young trees establish their root systems. Local volunteer fire companies will provide on going water needs as needed. Soil and excavation services will be provided by Hetrick Nursery.

As seven year recipients of the National Arbor Day Foundation’s Tree City USA status, the Borough of Boyertown is committed to identifying opportunities to plant effective shade and street trees within its borders. Borough residents can find out more about trees, planting opportunities and proper tree maintenance techniques by contacting the Tree Committee at tree@boyertownPA.org or by participating in the monthly Tree Committee meetings on the third Tuesday of each month at 6 p.m. in the BBB offices located at 3 E. Philadelphia Ave.
