Students from Pine Forge Academy and the Boyertown Area School District and churches will soon honor the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther king Jr. and his dream for America. The event will be held on Monday, Jan. 19, at 7 p.m. at New Hanover United Methodist Church, 2211 Swamp Pike, Gilbertsville.

The theme this year will center around the role of civil disobedience and law enforcement in our society.

A letter was sent from New Hanover UMC Pastor David Lewis and Pottstown Police Chief Richard Drumheller to area law enforcement, inviting uniformed officers to attend the service and join with students and congregation at the conclusion singing “We Shall Overcome.” The goal is to thank police officers for the difficult and dangerous work they do and to give law enforcement personnel an opportunity to show their support for Dr. King’s “Dream.”

The choir from Pine Forge Academy under the direction of Andrew Marshall and the choir from Boyertown Area Senior High School under the direction of Jeffrey Brunner will sing.

Drama directed by Daniel Williams of Pine Forge Academy will be developed by students from Pine Forge Academy and Boyertown Area churches. This year the drama will focus on issues concerning race and law enforcement and the philosophy of Dr. King. Each year the students challenge the community to live out King’s dream.

Nicole Falconer the principal at Pine Forge Academy and Dr. Richard Faidley the superintendent of the Boyertown Area School District will read from the words of Dr. King on non-violent protest.

The service ends with students, police officers and congregation singing, “We Shall Overcome.”

The community and police officers from the area are invited to attend.
