April 1 through May 15Spring Migration Watch: Welcome returning raptors, daily, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Hawk Mountain Sanctuary North Lookout. Join the official counter at North Lookout to watch for returning raptor migrants and other birds. Staff, trainees and volunteers will be on hand to help you spot and identify what you see so it’s a great time to learn more about the migration and in-flight ID tips. Trail fee applies.
May 6Wee One’s Walk: At Hawk Mountain Sanctuary at 10 a.m. There is a cost for non-members. Designed for children ages 3 to 5, this program is a great way to get young people interested in spending more time outdoors. The group will join an educator for a children’s story and nature activity followed by a short outdoor hike and culminating craft. Each month’s Wee One’s Walk will have a new theme linked to seasonal changes the kids can see and experience. Children should dress for weather, and registration is required by calling 610-756-6961. Learn about life at Melcher’s Grist Mill!: From 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. at Berks County Heritage Center, 1102 Red Bridge Road, Bern Township.
Ease into a spring Sunday afternoon and enjoy a great local history lesson.
Our volunteers will take you on an intimate and fascinating tour of Melcher’s Grist Mill at the Berks County Heritage Center. The small building played a big role in the life of the Melcher family from the 1880s through the 1950s.
Melcher’s Grist Mill is unique. Especially unusual is the fact the Melchers kept the mill for family use. The mill, constructed about 1888, was used primarily for milling various grains into animal feed and corn into cornmeal through the use of millstones.
Water power operated the mill which also provided power for a corn sheller, outside hoist, a bone mill, meat grinder, and sausage stuffing machines at butchering time, and a wooden tub washing machine for Mrs. Melcher. All these operations occurred on the lower level of the mill apart from the grain milling machinery on first and second floors. The stone at the Melcher Mill is unusual in that in most mills the bottom stone is stationary and the top one turns – and here it is the opposite.
Tours of the grist mill will be accompanied with explanations and demonstrations. Melcher’s Grist Mill is among many complete and well-preserved grist mills still standing.

Spend a “spirited” evening with local “ghost host” Charles J. Adams III. After spending time in mysterious Beidler House with its ghostly stories of tragedy and tribulation, we head on over to meet old “Isaac” at the grist mill ruins. We’re then off to the Ridgewood Winery to experience a tragic supernatural tale of jealousy and its aftermath.
