RecurringCenterport Lions Club: Jamming Sessions will be held every 2nd and 4th Thursday of the month. Music starts at 5:30 p.m. All musicians welcome.

Senior Citizens Club of Hamburg: The Hamburg Seniors meet at 2 p.m. the second and fourth Wednesday of each month in the Hamburg Area Middle School cafeteria. If school is canceled on the meeting day because of bad weather, the meeting is canceled.

Hamburg Public Library Story Time: The Hamburg Public Library has story time on Wednesday and Friday mornings at 11 a.m. for ages 18 months through 3 years old, preschoolers and home schooled early elementary. The schedule is available on the library’s website at www.berks.lib.pa.us/hamburgpl.

Hamburg Public Library Board Meetings: Library board meetings are held the second Tuesdays except July. Public encouraged to attend.

Chestnut Knoll Assisted Living: 120 W. Fifth Street, Boyertown, hosts a monthly family support group for those who are coping with Alzheimer’s disease. It is affiliated with the Alzheimer’s Association and is held on the third Thursday of each month at 6 p.m.

Shoemakersville Fire Company Line Dancing: Come out to the Banquet Hall on the second Friday of each month. There will be a DJ playing the best country music and a Cash Bar will also be available. From 7 p.m. to 10 p.m. Must be 21 to enter.

May 20Healthy Cooking on a Budget: At 6 p.m. at the Schuylkill Valley Community Library for adults sponsored by Redner’s Warehouse Markets. Participants will learn how to plan healthy meals and then will actually prepare them here in the library. Bring your appetites! Children’s Workshop: The Caterpillar and the Polliwog: At Hawk Mountain Sanctuary Visitor Center from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. There is a cost. Presented by Sue Reier. Limited to 15 children ages 4 to 8. Registration is required: Call 610-756-6961. Listen to a story, watch a short video. Crawl into a knitted “chrysalis,” and make butterflies. Sing metamorphosis songs, complete a floor puzzle, and meet real caterpillars and tadpoles. Puppets and models will be used in activities before heading outdoors to the Native Plant Garden pond to search for wild butterflies and frogs.

May 24Sunday on the River: From 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. Meet at Hawk Mountain Sanctuary Visitor Center. There is a cost. Other Dates include: May 31, and June 14 (sign up for one or more!). Registration required and fills fast: 610-756-6961. Enjoy a fully guided and laid-back paddle down the Little Schuylkill or Schuylkill River. Trips generally cover 5 to 8 miles and take up to three hours. Shuttle to starting point and all equipment and basic instruction is provided along with a strong focus on the cultural and natural history of the river corridor.

Performing Arts in the Parks: “Positive Flow featuring Carman Bryant”: At 6 p.m. at Berks County Heritage Center, 1102 Red Bridge Road, Bern Township

The Berks County Parks and Recreation Department is excited to open its 2015 Performing Arts in the Park series with the fabulous sounds of Positive Flow featuring Carman Bryant Sunday, May 24, at the Berks County Heritage Center, beginning at 6 p.m.

Carman Bryant’s style of music is passionate and energetic and it is a people magnet. She’s earned fans with her powerful and soulful approach to several musical styles including R&B, soul, funk, hip-hop, pop, blues and jazz.

She performs with her five-piece band Positive Flow with musicians King Raymond (percussion and vocals), Avery Hymon (bass and vocals), Hasid Stevenson (guitar and vocals), Jimmy Wilson (drums and vocals), and Alex Smolsky (keyboards and vocals).

Attendees are invited to bring along a picnic dinner to enjoy while taking in the music on this late spring evening. The concert is free, but there is a parking donation requested.

Elaine Meinhart returns to lead this class using artificial stone material to create a tufa leaf. This “leaf” can be used as a decor item or as a small bird bath. Class limited to 10 adults. May 29Warblers by Water: From 7 a.m. to 9:30 a.m. Meet at Hawk Mountain Sanctuary Visitor Center. Songbird survey by canoe. Guides: Rudy Keller and Todd Bauman. There is a cost. There’s nothing like a morning on the water, and mornings are an ideal time for wildlife watching, in particular the birds. Join us for a relaxed paddle along the Little Schuylkill to survey spring songbirds with counter Rudy Keller and Director of Land and Facilities Todd Bauman as your guides. Trip will cover approximately 5 miles and all canoes, life jackets, paddles, shuttle, and basic instruction will be provided.

May 29 & 30Relay for Life of Kutztown “Carnival”: 24 hours from 3 p.m. to 3 p.m. Live musical entertainment, food, fun and games. Open Volleyball games Saturday 10 a.m, Mentalist show Saturday 11 a.m. Proceeds benefit the American Cancer Society. Free Admission

May 30March Forth for Literacy: Heidelberg Association Children’s Book Drive. Collect Children’s Books in new or very good used condition. Mad Dash: 5-Mile, 5K or 2K trail race. The courses start at Reservoir Road just above the gate at the Parking Lot. This event is the second of the series of three race events and will be followed later in the year by the “Run To The Rock” 10K, 5K or 2.5K Trail Races at the Hamburg Community Park on Saturday June 27, 2015. All BMW Trail Races Series Races have great courses; registrant goodie bags; cash prizes for the fastest male and female racers in the long races and a generous slate of awards for all races; DJ Steel Thunder providing post-race entertainment; plenty of drinks, fruit and baked goodies to replenish the body; post-race activities for the kids; free hot lunch for all participants and volunteers; door prize drawings; and plenty of Trail Race Series and BMW gear for purchase. May 31Morning Birdwalk: At 8 a.m. at Berks County Heritage Center, 1102 Red Bridge Road, Bern Township.

Enjoy the beauty of spring with naturalist Katrina Knight from the Baird Ornithological Club. Be sure to wear good walking shoes and bring binoculars to spot spring warblers and other beautiful birds of the season. Beginning bird watchers are welcome!!!

The Spirits that Live in the Mill and on the Farm…with Charles J. Adams III: At 6:13 p.m. at Beidler House, 1130 Old River Road, Gibraltar.

Spend a “spirited” evening with local “ghost host” Charles J. Adams III. After spending time in mysterious Beidler House with its ghostly stories of tragedy and tribulation, we head on over to meet old “Isaac” at the grist mill ruins. We’re then off to the Ridgewood Winery to experience a tragic supernatural tale of jealousy and its aftermath.

June 2Full Moon Walk to South Lookout: From 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. Meet at Hawk Mountain Visitor Center. There is a cost. Registration required and fills fast. Call 610-756-6961. Limited to 15, ages 12 and over. Join Hawk Mountain educators for a fully-guided and moderate, two-hour walk by moonlight. This excursion covers one mile of rugged, natural terrain that also does have a gradual incline. Sturdy footwear is recommended and flashlights or headlamps with a red light are permitted.

June 3Wee Ones Walk: At 10 a.m. at Hawk Mountain Sanctuary Visitor Center Gallery. FREE for members, there is a cost for non-members. Designed for children ages 3 to 5, this program is a great way to get young people interested in spending more time outdoors. The group will join an educator for a children’s story and nature activity followed by a short outdoor hike and culminating craft. Each month’s Wee One’s Walk will have a new theme linked to seasonal changes the kids can see and experience. Children should dress for weather, and registration is required by calling 610-756-6961. Limited to 15 participants. Additional Wee One’s Walks are scheduled for: Wednesday, Aug. 5 and Wednesday, Sept. 2. Consider signing up for several walks at one time.

June 6Breakfast Buffet: At the Shoemakersville Fire Company 300 Church Ave. There is a cost, under 5 are free. From 7:30 a.m.-10:30 a.m. No breakfast in July or August.

Craft Event: At the annual Shoemakersville Children’s Fair from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Shoemakersville Park. Quality handcrafted items produced by local craftsmen. Special guest – Pennsylvania state dairy princess, Ashley Mohn.
