Songs of Broadway is the theme of the Boyertown Area Choral Association’s 27th annual Spring concert. Two free performances will be offered the first weekend in May.

On Saturday, May 6, at 6:30 p.m. the 50-member choir will be at Emmanuel Lutheran Church, 150 N. Hanover Street, Pottstown. A 3 p.m. concert will be held on Sunday, May 7, at The Good Shepherd United Church of Christ, located at 35 W. Philadelphia Avenue in Boyertown.

You don’t need to be a fan of the theatre to relate to the songs of love or loss, triumph or tragedy, hopes or fears that have come from well-known musicals. With such numbers as The Phantom of the Opera’s hypnotic “Music of the Night”, the heart-wrenching ballad “I Dreamed a Dream” from Les Miserables, or the fun-loving 1960s rock ‘n roll medley from Jersey Boys, the selection of show tunes touch on a range of emotions to appeal to a wide audience. Toes will be tapping during the energetic “You Can’t Stop the Beat” from Hairspray, while hearts will be stirred by the dramatic anthem “Make Them Hear You” from Ragtime. The ladies of the chorus will be featured in a hauntingly beautiful rendition of “Feed the Birds,” Walt Disney’s favorite number from the movie version of Mary Poppins.

BACA is directed by Boyertown alumni Donna M. House and Donna Jean Marshall. Accompaniment is provided by pianist Robin Ward and bass player Scott Green.

Both concerts are free and open to the public. A cookie reception will follow the May 7 performance at Good Shepherd UCC.
