February brings frigid weather and frozen streams and lakes. Taking a road trip to a central Pennsylvania limestone stream or spring creek will allow an angler to fish ice-free streams.
Yellow Breeches Creek, or “Breeches” as it is also known, in the area of Boiling Springs offers a catch and release section where an angler can use flies or artificial lures. Children’s Lake provides water to The Run. The Run is a very short section of stream that empties into Yellow Breeches near the start of the special regulations area. The Run maintains a constant temperature year-round thanks to the water from spring fed Children’s Lake. The Run is also managed under catch-and-release regulations.
Yellow Breeches Outfitters is just around the corner from the parking lot at The Run and there is also an Appalachian Trail regional office in the vicinity. Children’s Lake is stocked with trout by the PFBC and offers a walking trail. Bring your camera as the lake has many waterfowl present.
Breeches is stocked by the PFBC and the Yellow Breeches Anglers and Conservation Association, Inc. Check the PFBC website for stock dates and meeting times.
Outside of the special regulation area, anglers can find miles of fishable water from just below Huntsdale Fish Hatchery to the confluence with the Susquehanna River. There are many areas to park. Look for PFBC signs or landowner signs that state fishing is permitted. Grab a map and follow the meandering blue line.
Effective flies this month: Little Black Stonefly, Griffith’s Gnat, John’s Spring Creek Pupa, Walt’s Worm, Wooly Bugger, scuds, small nymphs and egg patterns. If there is a warm day, don’t be afraid to tie on a large dry fly such as a Royal Wulff or a Stimulator.
