The Oley Township supervisors reported at their Dec. 9 meeting that traffic enforcement of a local work zone netted nearly 80 traffic citations.
Township police in November patrolled the intersection of Friedensburg Road and Route 73 where left turns from Route 73 both east- and west-bound are currently prohibited due to repair of a bridge located near the intersection.
The road work is expected to continue until late summer 2014.
Police also announced that 21 speeding violations were issued after police patrolled Covered Bridge Road in the area between Route 73 and the Covered Bridge. Residents had recently complained about vehicles speeding in the area.
A canine drug sweep of the Oley Valley senior high and middle school and Berks Vo-Tech produced 25 “hits” and four “finds.” Canine details from the Pottstown, North Coventry, Reading and the Berks County Sheriff’s Office assisted.
Township supervisor Jeffrey Spatz said the township continues in negotiations with landowner Christopher J. Hartman over access to the sacred oak. The township is seeking to allow public access to the site during specified days of the year.
Spatz once again reminded residents that until an agreement is reached, the property remains private and closed to the public. Access to the site can only be obtained with the owner’s consent.
