‘We look forward to it,’ said Mahlon Chapman as he and his wife Judy sat down to eat a free Christmas meal at the Union Volunteer Fire Company in Bethel. It was about the fourth time there for them.

‘Frog’ Richard Phillips, Steward of the social quarters of the fire company, explained it was the eighth time the fire company had done this. The motivation: his asking a question those many years ago of ‘Why don’t we give back?’

A troupe of 15 or more volunteers helped wait on attendees, mostly seniors, whether bringing the dinners or beverages, slicing desserts or helping in the kitchen.

Among them, Scott and Kelly Kaufman of Kaufman’s Barbecue.

‘Kaufman’s do a lot for us,’ said Frog, explaining they did the turkeys and the Kaufman’s Restaurant did the potato filling. Add to that a vegetable, roll and dessert as well as coffee, tea, soda or water and a delicious dinner was enjoyed by about 120 local residents.

Giving back, supporting the seniors: ‘It’s a good thing to do.’
