Area firefighters responded to a structure fire on in the first day of the year in Pike Township.

The fire occurred at approximately 10:38 a.m. in the basement of a home off of Hill Church Road near Bechteslville.

Eastern Berks Deputy Fire Chief Chris Schaeffer arrived at the scene to find smoke and fire in a multiple story residential home.

Apparatus laid five inch supply line up the long winding driveway according to Rev. Paul E. Bartlett, Public Relations Officer of Eastern Berks Fire.

“The call was initially dispatched as an Automatic Fire Alarm, but was quickly upgraded to the structure assignment,” said Bartlett.

Reportedly fire apparatus from all three Eastern Berks Stations (Bally, Barto, and Bechtelsville) were dispatched to the one alarm fire, in addition to Oley, Earl, Boyertown, Pennsburg and Boyertown Ambulance.

Fire crews pulled a preconnect and made a quick stop on the fire which was centered in the basement near a wood stove, according to Bartlett. Crews pulled the ceiling in that area and removed burning debris. The roof was laddered and checked along with the chimney. Smoke ejectors were employed to clear the smoke from the structure.

No injuries were reported.
